What to wear to a Renaissance faire
A Renaissance faire will let you in with a costume or without one. Shoes you can walk in matter more than a perfect outfit.
Do you have to dress up?
No. Costumes are welcome nearly everywhere and almost never required. If a weekend has a stricter rule, that faire's calendar is where it will say so. Street clothes are a normal way to spend the day.
Casual
Wear what you would wear for a long walk outdoors. A hat helps when the lanes are open to the sky. One faire piece is enough if you want to play along: a shirt, a vest, or a hat. The shops inside the faire, a thrift store, or a friend's trunk are the usual places people find that piece. Some faires and some nearby shops rent outfits, and plenty do not, so ask before you count on a rack at the entrance.
Men
There is no men's uniform at a Ren Faire. A loose shirt, a vest, or a tunic reads as costume if you want it to. Ordinary pants and a T-shirt are also fine. The choice is comfort in a crowd, not a portrait.
Women
There is no women's uniform either. A skirt, a blouse, or a bodice is a common start, and none of them is required. Pick something you can sit on the ground in, and a hem you can walk in on grass and gravel.
Kids
Kids do well in clothes they can run in, and in shoes they have already worn. A hat is worth packing when the sun is on the lanes. A full costume is optional. If you want a kids' show or a kids' area, check that faire's site. Not every faire has one.
Shoes and weather
Paths can be dusty, muddy, or uneven. Shoes you have already walked in are the ones that last the day. Brand-new boots are a common way to leave early. Sandals are a gamble on gravel. Sunscreen, and a hat if the sky is open, belong in the bag. Shade comes and goes with the trees and the tents. The armor does not count as sun protection.
Theme weekends
